Study Abroad
The sun has dried out the grass and you can smell the dust. Many animals are moving to nearby waterholes to quench their thirst. At one of the waterholes, we come across a giraffe.
"How can such a long-necked animal drink?"
"Watch and see how they do it." The giraffe spreads its front legs, bends its knees and takes a few sips. Ever vigilant near a waterhole, it jerks its head up.
“With such a height difference, why don't they faint when they lift their head" someone asks.
Your Eko Tracks tour guide explains that giraffe are the only animals that have a network of specialized valves in their veins to maintain a constant blood pressure and so prevents them from passing out. Interesting. We learn something new every day. Slowly we are heading back to camp.
